Dear BRETTnews: Nowadays I do just fine with the chicks but there was a time when I was to shy to even ask for a girl's number. It took just one wild encounter. though, with one unforgettable chick to prove to me that I could score any time I wanted. It was my freshman year of college. I'd just entered the library, not pleased about the prospects of spending the evening hitting the books. I'd have much rather been hitting the sheets, if you know what I mean. And it wasn't long before it looked like I'd be doing just that.

She was a student herself, no doubt working the information desk to help pay her tuition. She was about 5'10", 120 lbs. Blue eyes, blond hair, nice firm behind, great chest. What can I say, she was well nigh perfect. The kind of woman that, in those days, I thought was way out of my league. She was giving me the eye, though, I swear she was, with a look that told me this just might be my lucky night.

I asked her her name. "Candy," she said. "Nice name." I replied, figuring it couldn't hurt to flatter her a bit, though I was pretty sure it wasn't going to be necessary. A couple of minutes passed. "Mine's John." I said. "Oh. That's nice." she purred. Well, okay, she didn't exactly purr, she wasn't really the purring kind but it was sorta...I don't know, breathy? I thought for just a moment about the next day's psych exam that I was supposed to be studying for but, what the hell, it was just a midterm. And what was I going to do, pass up a chance at a package like this? I don't think so.

"So you live here on campus?" I asked, figuring it was the perfect opening for her to invite me over for a beer or something. "I'm sorry, what'd you say?" "I was just asking if you lived on campus..." "Oh, yeah. Um, excuse me," she said. "I've gotta go take a pill.".

A pill? Talk about an obvious hint! She had to go take her Pill! I was in! It took her nearly forty-five minutes to return but I didn't mind the wait. I knew she'd be worth it. "Oh," she said upon her return. "You're still here." I knew she was pleased.

Finally, I decided to make my move. "So, you wanna go have a beer or something?" Well, wouldn't you know it, right then the phone rang. She answered it, listened for a moment and finally said," Let me change phones, OK?" She went into the office that was right off the info desk. I had a pretty good idea the caller was a guy, maybe someone with whom she had scheduled a date for later that night. She probably had slipped away to cancel their plans, making sure he didn't hear me in the background so he wouldn't get suspicious.

Oddly, though, some time passed and she didn't return. I slipped into the office and found an emergency exit standing slightly ajar. She was gone. I didn't let it bother me, though. She probably just got cold feet, she'd likely been a little intimidated by me. I never saw her again but I remember her to this day and I'm pretty sure that she's been kicking herself ever since that night for passing up her golden opportunity.
